Website Guidelines

Glossary

Accessibility

Within these guidelines, accessibility means that the website's content can be used by people regardless of disability.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets, a new feature being added to HTML that gives both Web site developers and users more control over how pages are displayed. With CSS, designers and users can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear. These style sheets can then be applied to any Web page.

Div

Division. Defines a block of HTML. Commonly used to apply CSS to a chunk of a page. See this tag reference for more information.

Dreamweaver

Macromedia Dreamweaver is the web site development application of choice for the USM Libraries. It provides a powerful combination of visual layout tools, a robust templating system, and code editing support.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language, the language used to create documents on the World Wide Web.

Keyword

Any word or phrase that has particular significance to the current page, including hyperlinks.

Scannable

Text which can be quickly glanced at to find specific information is considered scannable.

Table

An HTML tag which defines a table for tabular data or for modifying the layout of a page. See this tag reference for more information.

Usability

Refers to design features that make a product user friendly. For instance, Web sites with usability problems could be hard to navigate, difficult for disabled people to use, or have unclear instructions for use.
