EndNote is one of a number of personal reference database programs in use today. The main functions of such programs are:
Maintenance of a database of reference
Downloading reference from other databases
Using the database to link to references in word-processed documents
Generating a bibliography in the correct style for publications
Installation of EndNote automatically transfers EndNote functions into Word under tools.
In order to use EndNote for in-text citations, you must already have a library containing all of the citations you will need and both the EndNote Library and your Word file should be open.
As you type your document, you will be able to insert references and create your bibliography as you type. Citations retrieved from a database search must be saved prior to importing them into EndNote.
A logical process for incorporating the use of EndNote into the writing process is to: Search databases, Save references as .txt files, Create library, Import references into library, Select Citation style, Write document using word, Import references into word document from EndNote.
Filters allow you to import reference from Databases to any text file that includes labels or tags that identify the type of information being imported. A filter is selected during the import process to show EndNote exactly how to interpret the information coming from the database. Because each database offered by each vendor has its own way of identifying the information, the filters must be specific to the information provider and the database. In many instances, the filters already exist in EndNote. Occasionally, a filter may need to be downloaded from the EndNote website.
To find the appropriate filters for USM databases go to: USM Libraries EndNote Filter page.
Importing references from databases to your EndNote Library varies from database to database. The process is simple and in most cases is a direct export from the database to Endnote. The basic steps include marking the references, saving the references and exporting the references to Endnote.
