CON 308 - Characteristics of Peer Reviewed Jounrals

What is a Peer Reviewed Journal?

  • In a Peer Reviewed journal other scholars in the author's field of specialty critically assess articles before they are accepted for publication.
  • Peer review is the accepted method for ensuring that information is accurate and of the highest quality.
  • Some content may not be peer reviewed. These include news items, editorials, book and article reviews.

What are the Types of Peer Reviewed Journals?

Some databases, like CINAHL, allow you to select specific types of peer reviewed journal articles. These are:

Blind Peer Reviewed The author does not know the identity of the reviewers
Double Blind The author is not known to the reviewers, and the reviewers do not know the author
Editorial Review Reviewed by members of the journal's editorial board who evaluate the content and methodology of the author(s)' work and result
Expert Peer Reviewed The reviewers are selected experts in the field or on the topic
Peer Reviewed Some kind of review process has taken place
