EYE109J - Gender, Representation & Resistance

Introduction | Reference Sources | Indexes & Databases | Books | Internet Resources | Writing the Paper

 Contact Information

Reference Librarians Pat Prieto, Bill Grubb, and Zip Kellogg/tel. 780-4272 would be glad to help you find information at any time.

 Introduction

This class is an information intensive one. A facility with proprietary library databases, using URSUS (the book catalog), locating experts, and refined searching of the Net will all work to your advantage. The reference librarians will visit the class and are available to meet with students individually or in groups.

This course guide pulls together most of the links you'll need to find articles, books, and good internet resources for the Gender (EYE 109J) class. Your professors and the librarians encourage you to use it, as it will almost certainly save you time and help you find things that would be acceptable to the professor (some things found on Google would not be acceptable).

Reference Sources (for SUMMARIES of topics)

 Books

In order to find books and government documents and other materials held in the University of Maine System you will need to consult URSUS, the online catalog.

If you do not know the exact subject terms describing the topic you need, try doing a keyword search.

Here is a sampler of topics you'll find in URSUS. Again, these will link you to books.

Sex Role Feminism
Gender Identity Feminists
Race Discrimination Androgyny
Sexology Patriarchy
Sexual Discrimination against Women Misogyny

To obtain materials not located at your USM, but still within URSUS, you will need to click on the Request button on the URSUS screen and enter your name and barcode number (found under the barcode on your USM Card, which begins with 25022....). Your barcode will need to be activated in the library. If the item is not available through our catalog then try Maine InfoNet. And the library staff will get you books and articles from all over the world (items they don't own) by using Interlibrary Loan (Illiad).
