Faculty Information and Forms

Course reserve forms (in PDF format):

How do I place materials on Electronic Reserves?

On the Request to Reserve Materials form indicate the type of electronic file you plan to submit. You may submit electronic files on diskette or via electronic mail.

Submit on a diskette
Electronic files may be submitted on a 3 x 5" diskette which is clearly marked with the platform, software used, and file format of the document. Drop the diskette off at the Library Circulation Desk.

Send electronic mail
Include in your message the course number and name to which your electronic file should be linked. Be sure to include your name and that of other instructors for the course. Attach all text and graphics in MIME format if possible.

Send e-mail to:

williams@usm.maine.edu

What file formats are acceptable for E-Reserves course materials?

We recommend that faculty use PDF files (Portable Document Format from Adobe Acrobat) or World Wide Web compatible documents (i.e. HTML, VRML, ASCII text, etc.) so that students can access the course materials using the most common computer platforms (Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX). PDF Readers and Web browsers are available without charge on some campus networks or the Internet.

Materials for E-Reserves are acceptable in file formats created using any standard word processing software.

Graphics are preferred in JPEG format or GIF format. The following graphic formats are also acceptable: PhotoShop 3.0, TIFF, PICT, BMP, EPS.

Will the library scan material if I do not have an electronic file?

The library will scan course reserves materials into an Adobe PDF document if you do not have an electronic file.

How can I have my course reserve listing in URSUS linked to my course home page?

You can register your course related Web site by completing the relevant sections of the Request to Reserve Material form.

You can also register your course related Web site by completeing the the Faculty Homepage Link submission form.

Who has access to Electronic Reserves materials?

We are developing user authentication which restricts access to Electronic Reserves materials to UMS faculty and students.

What about copyright?

The library is in the process of working out copyright issues. Please check with staff.

Why did you choose Adobe Acrobat (PDF)?

Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) accurately reproduces the look and feel of the printed page, complete with fonts, graphics, formatting, and black-and-white or grayscale images.

PDF files are widely used across the Internet for full text digital documents, and can be read on Macintosh,Windows and UNIX computers using free software.

Other scan programs do not preserve much of the original formatting of a document and require extensive editing.

How do I download the Adobe Acrobat reader?

Acrobat readers for multiple platforms are available from the library server. Download Acrobat Reader for your computer. It is free and most electronic course materials are PDF (Portable Document Format) files readable only with the Reader.

Easy to follow instructions guide you to setting up your computer so that the Acrobat Reader will automatically activate whenever a PDF file is selected.

More information about Acrobat® is available at Adobe's Acrobat download page.

Will the library continue to maintain a print course reserves collection?

Yes. Books and other copyrighted material are only available at the Reserve Desk. Most material available in electronic format will also be available in print at the Reserve Desk.
