Borrowing from Other Libraries
In-State Borrowing:
Loan Periods and Renewals
Undergraduates & Courtesy: Four
week loan with (1) two week renewal.
Graduate & Faculty: One Semester loan with (1) semester
renewal.
Items are renewable if they have no
holds, have not been recalled, or are not billed. Renewals
may be in person or by telephone. Self renewals are possible
on URSUS using the Your
Record function.
Requestor Function
Material from other University System Libraries, the Maine
State Library, Bangor Public Library, the Maine State Law
and Legislative Reference Library and participating MaineCat
Libraries may be requested directly online, without staff
assistance, via URSUS.
Materials will be sent to the library you choose. Items are
generally received in 3-5 business days and will be held for
you at the Circulation desk for 10 days.
Circulation does not notify you when an item arrives. You
can, however, check the status of your request, by looking
at Your
Record, under User
Services in URSUS.
Once an item has arrived, the status of the
book will change to Ready for pickup or MELNK
RECVD. If an item has a status of In Transit,
the item has been sent from the lending library and is on
its way.
Overdue
Policies
Requestor material may be returned to any University of
Maine System Library.
Late charges will be billed to all patrons for overdue Requestor
materials. Charges will be billed by the owning library, but
may be paid at any University System Library.

Lost/Damaged Material

on their library card and charges will be assessed for lost
or damaged material.
Out-of-State Borrowing:
Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad)
Borrowing Guidelines
Materials that may be obtained include books and photocopies
of journal articles. However, types of materials not ordinarily
circulated by this library are unlikely to be loaned by other
libraries. Examples are reference books, newspaper or journal
issues, audio/visual materials, and fragile, rare, or otherwise
valuable books. Additionally, many libraries are reluctant to
loan high demand or current year titles, dissertations, or master's
theses.
It is expected that requests will be for research or course-related
study. Interlibrary loan is for short term use and cannot
be used as a substitution for purchasing textbooks.
Procedure
All first-time Interlibrary Loan users and those who have
not yet registered in ILLiad
must create a user profile before submitting requests.
It is HIGHLY recommended that before creating your profile
you read the ILLiad
faq to gain an understanding of the ILLiad system and
its capabilities.
It is important that your citations be complete. For a periodical
article request, the source of reference (index, database
used, or source) should be filled in. ILL staff will assist
you in completing the request form if you have problems. Average
turnaround time for articles is 3-5 workdays. For books the
average time is 5-7 workdays.
Articles are delivered electronically to your desktop (quality
permitting) as outlined in the ILLiad
faq and the Electronic
Delivery faq . If the quality of a copy will not permit
electronic delivery, the copy will be placed on the cart outside
the ILL office on the campus you designate for pickup. Books
will always be placed on this cart. During hours when the
ILL office is closed, the pickup location will move to the
Circulation desk. You will be notified by e-mail when your
materials arrive.
Loan periods and other stipulations (library use only, for
example) are set by the lending library and must be adhered
to by the borrower.
Renewals are handled in a manner outlined in the Interlibrary
Loan faq .
Return materials to the ILL office when it is open, to the
Circulation desk when it is not.
Fees accrue for overdue items. You do not need to return
articles.
Costs
Most libraries do not charge for loans and photocopies. Patrons
should indicate on their ILLiad requests the maximum amount
they are willing to pay, if any, for materials we cannot obtain
free. Patrons are responsible for authorized charges regardless
of whether or not they pick up materials or find them useful.
Charges are added to your Libraryrecord.
