Instructional Services for Non-USM Groups
While most of our instructional services are geared to serve the needs of USM students and faculty, USM Libraries work with Upward Bound and other groups to provide instruction on an as-needed basis.
Sessions listed below or specialized instruction may be scheduled 3 weeks in advance at bgrubb@usm.maine.edu or 1-207-780-4672.
Library Tours
Groups will tour all seven floors of Glickman Library on the Portland campus, including a brief glimpse of Osher Map Library and Special Collections depended on staff availability. Groups will be advised on Circulation policies, photocopying, community and USM user computer use and printing, collection locations and how to find books by call number. 30 minutes.
How To Find Books & Articles
Hosted in the instruction classroom, Room 518, each participant may use their own computer to follow live instruction from the USM Libraries homepage. Participants will be shown how to locate books and other library materials using the library catalog (URSUS) and how to use library databases to locate magazine and journal articles. Other information can be provided upon prior consultation. 45 minutes.
Web Evaluation
While most people consider Google a research tool, many instructors will not accept Web sites for research. Why? Learn how to use the Web effectively and critically to get the most out of every search. Learn why library resources are usually faster and more reliable than the Internet. 45 minutes.
