 Overview      

The Library Liaison Program is designed to facilitate communication and foster collaboration between the Libraries and the University of Southern Maine community. Each academic department and/or major program is assigned a librarian to provide information to faculty on library collections and services. 

Who we are

 Each librarian at the University of Southern Maine Libraries has liaison responsibilities to one or more academic departments. In addition, each academic department at USM has named a faculty departmental representative to the Libraries.

Services

Communication

  • Share information about library services and resources
  • Provide an initial contact for library questions or problems
  • Attend departmental meetings to announce changes in library services and resources
  • Notify your department of new resources and services through an email distribution list
  • Attend departmental events, lectures, performances to stay informed

Collection Development

  • Assist with acquisitions and collection development
  • Review your department's acquisition budget report and remind you of pertinent deadlines
  • Consult appropriate reviewing sources to suggest books to order for your department
  • Assist faculty or departments who are proposing a new course offering by determining the adequacy of library holdings

Information Literacy

  • Serve as a primary contact for library instruction and information literacy
  • Facilitate or provide general, course-specific, or assignment-specific instruction for students taking courses in your department
  • In partnership with ITMS, introduce and assist faculty with new library technologies to incorporate into their courses and assignments

 Other

  • Provide one-on-one orientation for new faculty members
  • Gather information about new areas of research, courses, and programs in your department
  • Provide orientations for new students in your department
  • Demonstrate new resources and services of interest to your department
