- The papers, donated in November 2002, span the period 1946 to 2002 but the bulk of the material dates
from the 1970s to the present. The papers document Bernstein's education, her work in the community particularly in the fields
of education, public health and social services, and her activity in the local Jewish community and interest in Israel-Arab relations.
Because these papers record the development and achievements of a woman who grew up in New England and became a leader-activist in
the Maine community, this collection will support USM graduate programs such as Women's Studies, American and New England Studies,
LAC's Leadership Studies, and the Muskie School. Because Bernstein is still very active, for instance she just co- chaired of the
Governor's Transition Team and will be teaching in "Arab-Israel Conflict: Myth and Fact" during the spring session of the Osher
Lifelong Learning Institute, Special Collections looks forward to additions to her papers.

- The papers, donated in February 2002, span the period 1934-2002, but the bulk of the material dates
from the 1940s to 1970s. The papers primarily document his civil work and personal life. Of particular value is 25 folders
of family correspondence dating from 1940 to 1945 and covering Bernstein's service in World War 2. This is prime research
material and could be used for research projects in the History Department and American and New England Studies Program. The
collection contains the many tributes from the community occasioned by his death in 2002 and document in life long service to
the community.
